Poestenkill- Samuel Dzembo, 100, of Columbia Hill Road passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at his home just one week from his 101st birthday. Born in Poestenkill, he was the son of the late Marko and Efroska Kapitula Dzembo who came to the U.S. from the Ukraine. Celebrating his family traditions was important to him his whole life. He graduated from Brunswick Dist. #9 and attended Troy High School in addition to helping on the family farm.
He married his best friend and sweetheart, Ellen Legenbauer in 1938 enjoying 68 years together before her passing in 2007. Sam worked for General Electric in Schenectady, retiring from there in March 1976 after 35 years as a machinist. He was a member of GE’s 25-year club and the Electrical Workers Union 101, CIO. Sam was most proud to have helped develop the “after – burner” for jet engines while at GE.
An active member of the community, Sam was a life member and past president of the Poestenkill Fire Co., a founding member of the Poestenkill Ambulance a member of the Poestenkill Historical Society and the Poestenkill Seniors. Sam was also a member of the First Baptist Church of East Poestenkill.
Most of Sam’s friends knew him as a lifelong hunter, fisherman, and trapper. He received a lifetime membership award from the NY State Trappers Assoc. in 2007, and was called upon many times by the State of New York to trap “nuisance” animals.
Sam was the brother of the late, Alexander, Peter, Max, and Andrew Dzembo.
Sam is survived by his children, Robert (Mary) Dzembo of Poestenkill and Ruth (Terry) Brod of Rockford, MI; his grandchildren Deron (Anne) Brod, Tracy Russo, Scott Brod, Brian Dzembo and Lisa (Jason) Freeman, his great grandchildren Emily, Elise and Megan Brod, Jesse, Ellen and Gabrielle Russo; Chase, Quinn and Sayge Dzembo; and Elijah Barrett Freeman. Sam is also survived by his brother Metro (Shirley) Dzembo of Englewood, Fla. and his sister in law Olga Dzembo of Troy as well as many precious nieces and nephews.
Sam’s family wishes to thank Lori and Lisa as well as their helpers, Karrie, Marianne, and Jean for the compassionate care they gave to Sam allowing him to remain at home.
Funeral Sunday February 14, 2016, 4p.m. at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park.
Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Funeral Chapel on Sunday 1-4 p.m. prior to the service.
Interment Monday 11 a.m. at the Brookside Cemetery, Barberville.
