Richard V. Wandler

d. December 5, 2020

Averill Park-It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of a beautiful spirit, husband, father and friend Richard V. Wandler. We are comforted by the memories of a kind, humble and courageous man. A decorated Marine, our father and friend was relieved of his service to family and country on December 5, 2020. Born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1933, Richard was the second oldest of five siblings.
He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951 and served a tour in Korea. Following his service commitment in the Air Force, he joined the Marines in 1954. He met the love of his life at the age of 18, and informed her that she was going to be his wife one day and wedded on January 9, 1959. Serving two tours in Vietnam, he received the Navy Commendation Medal for valor, two purple hearts and numerous other medals for his service. He respectfully earned the moniker “Guru” by his brothers-in-arms for his sense and wit while in the field. He retired in 1971, after a combined service of 20 years to our county. His passion in life was his family and friends.
He was known as a jokester and any encounter guaranteed laughter and many smiles. After retiring from the Marines in 1971 and now the father of three wonderful children, his career turned to the Boy Scouts of America & he was the Ranger at Camp Rotary. Afterwards, he became a truck driver of short and long-haul trucking. Finally, permanently retiring in 2000, he continued to fill his life with family, laughter and friends. He enjoyed card games, fishing, making beef jerky and raising hell with his son-in-law‘s. No one could make him shine brighter than his family and friends. The laughter and smiles were endless and contagious whenever he was in your presence. The passion and love he held for his family and friends were his eternal Fountain of Youth. He will be missed dearly but we celebrate all that he has given to us and those who knew him. His kindness and friendship will forever be in our hearts as our Lord opens the gates to eternal life. In addition, Odin will also have a special place in Valhalla for this true warrior. A true patriot, husband, father and friend, we salute you.
Richard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bea and their 3 children: Tammy Wandler (Kurt Salmon) of Averill Park, NY, Richard Wandler Jr., of Fort Myers, Fl, and DeAnn Wandler- Vukovich (George) of Alliance, OH. He is also survived by grandchildren Derek, Joshua, Courtney, Jacqueline and Adam as well as his great grandchildren Emma and Evonna.
