Averill Park- James E. Smyth, 83, of Averill Park, died Sunday, June 20, 2021, at his home. Born Jan. 7, 1938, in Troy, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Mildred (Gundrum) Smyth. Jim graduated from Averill Park High School (Class of ’55) and attended Hudson Valley Community College. He served in the U.S. Navy (1956-1958) and retired as a lineman from New York State Electric and Gas. Jim will be remembered for his love of history (especially of his ancestral home of Northern Ireland), his gift of gab, and his ability to captivate a room with his fine tenor voice or an epic work of poetry recited from memory. He belonged for many years to the International Order of Odd Fellows and was a lifetime member of the Stephentown Valley Rod and Gun Club. He is survived by three sons, Edward (Christine) of Wynantskill, Allen (Julie) of Worthington, Ohio, and Joseph (Amy) of Melrose; his brother, Charles “Chick” Smyth, of Averill Park; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita G. Brown-Smyth, whose grandchildren also considered him Grampa. Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service 3 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at the Taborton Cemetery,Taborton Road, Sand Lake located on the hill behind the Zion UCC Church,with reception immediately following at The Arlington House in West Sand Lake.
