Averill Park-Estelle (Rogers) Nelson, a longtime resident of Snake Hill Road, passed away peacefully in her sleep during the night of September 11, 2014 in St. Petersburg, Florida; she was 94. Estelle had recently moved to Florida with her loving daughter, Linda Warren. Born at home on July 22, 1920 on Burden Lake Rd. in Averill Park, Estelle was the daughter of the late Joseph Radijawic (Rogers) and Eva Kardokas (Rogers), both of Vilnius, Lithuania. The Radijawics took the name Rogers shortly after their arrival in America in 1910. Estelle graduated from Averill Park High School and worked with her father and older siblings at Faith Mills in Averill Park. In 1942 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in West Sand Lake, Estelle married her husband of 36 years, Wilton Thomas Nelson, known as “Tex”, of Vinita, OK. and formerly Dent County, MO. They moved to Troy, and then to Vinita while Wilton served in Europe during World War Two. In 1954, Estelle and Wilton built their home on Snake Hill Road in Poestenkill next to her parents’ home, where generations of the her family gathered over the years. She was a gifted gardener active into her 90s, who kept large flower and vegetable gardens, berry patches and fruit trees, and led walks in the forest behind her home. She enjoyed feeding the fish in her pond, hunting and fishing, and her needlework and other crafts. She and Wilton were proud of their horses and she was an active equestrian earlier in life. She had a great love for country and western music and square dancing, and enjoyed seeing live music until the very end of her life. Estelle was active in the Troy Elks Club, where she served as Historian and President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and at Trinity Lutheran Church and later St. Henry’s Catholic Church. She retired from Quick Way Excavating in Poestenkill in 1978 where she was the office manager. Estelle was a founding member of the Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of the Knights of Lithuania. She was fluent in Lithuanian and proud of her heritage, maintaining a correspondence with relatives still living in Lithuania. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to visit her family in Florida. Estelle was predeceased by her husband Wilton, her son Kairl Wilton Nelson and her brothers Joseph Rogers and George Joseph Rogers. Survivors include her daughter Linda Jean Warren of St. Petersburg, her sister Helen A. Hayner, of Chestertown, N.Y.; her grandchildren Jeffery (Kathy) Nelson of Delray Beach, FL.; Karen Nelson of Boynton Beach, FL.; Laura Nelson of Corsicana, TX; Darrin (Gail) Nelson of Loxahatchee FL; John (Shannon) Warren Jr. of Chestertown and Scott Warren Sr. of Poestenkill; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Service Friday September 19, 2014, 7 p.m. at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral chapel on Friday 4-7 p.m. prior to the service.
