North Greenbush- Doris J. Hoffay, (nèe Yakel), 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the Van Rensselaer Manor Nursing Facility.
Doris was born and raised in Troy, NY and was a graduate of Troy High School. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Agnes (Gowans) Yakel. Upon Marriage to Gene Hoffay, she became a lifelong resident of Poestenkill, NY, raising two sons. Doris had a long career working at the Watervliet Arsenal as an administrative assistant, and also with the NYS Office of Adjudication in Menands, as a secretary. She was a strong and active support of women in the work place and community. While at the Arsenal, she was a member of the Federal Women’s Program and the FEW (Federally Employed Women). She was an active member of the YWCA, and also served on the board of Elmwood Hill Cemetery for many years.
Doris was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was always there for her family. She was loved and will be missed and fondly remembered.
Doris was an avid knitter, and, Christmas being her favorite time of year, will always be remembered by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, by the beautiful Christmas stockings she hand-knitted for each one of them. She also enjoyed spending time doing many activities with her sister Lois.
Doris leaves behind two sons, Timothy A. Hoffay (Paula) of Poestenkill and Jay D. Hoffay (Mary Ann) of East Poestenkill; five grandchildren, Rebecca Klimek (Rod), Holly Whitman, Heather Hansen (Karen), Joshua Hoffay, and Sheilah Cole (James); 14 great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Yakel of Florida, and a sister-in-law, Janet Hoffman, of Poestenkill. She was also blessed with many nieces and nephews.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Gene; sisters Irene Lashley and Lois Houser; sisters in law, Lourdes Yakel and Evelyn Kenney; brothers in law, Barney Houser and Ed Hoffman, and granddaughter, Jessica Rae Hoffay.
As per her request, all arrangements will be private.
Doris’s Family would like to heartfully and gratefully thank the staff at VRM B-1 Unit for their love, compassion, and care for Doris during her time there. It will not be forgotten.
