Barbara E. Malone

d. July 15, 2018

Natick, MA-Barbara E. Malone, a resident of Averill Park, NY for more than 50 years, passed away on July 15, 2018 at the Beaumont Rehabilitation Center in Natick, MA. She was born on October 1, 1929, in the Leonard Hospital in Lansingburgh, the oldest child of the late Joseph and Bernadette (Bechard) McCormack. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Richard, and sister, Audrey Dayton, and her close friends and caregivers, Helen and Stuart Buxton.
She was a devoted wife to her husband of 67 years, Larry, and loving mother of Laurence Malone and his wife Eva (Davidson) of Oneonta, Robert Malone and his wife Kate (Curtin) of Westford, MA, Patricia Campbell Malone and her husband Thomas Campbell of Natick, MA, and Nancy Malone and her husband Arthur Ng of Hackensack, NJ.
Barbara grew up in Troy and Hyde Park.  She graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1947 and Troy Business College in 1948. She worked in the New York State Conservation Department in various secretarial positions from 1948 until 1957 when she left her position as secretary to the Commissioner following the birth of her first child.
For the following two decades, her first priority was being a homemaker and proud mother and supporter of her family, particularly in their aspirations and education. She never missed one of their home soccer or volleyball games or tennis matches, often walking a mile through woods to cheer on her teams.  Coming home after school, her children typically were greeted with sixties music blasting from the radio and fresh baked cookies on the kitchen counter.
In 1979 she returned to work in the Department of Motor Vehicles as a Supervisor in the Insurance Division. She retired in 1990. She was a former member of the Averill Park and Sand Lake Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and served as an elections poll worker. She was a longtime member of the Brookside Senior Housing Board of Directors and the Sand Lake Seniors.
Barbara was strong with a quiet presence.  She had a wide smile, an infectious laugh and a wry sense of humor.  She was a good listener and confidante, and if asked, always provided sage advice.  She was kind and caring and known for her generous spirit. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings, dancing, bowling, knitting and crocheting afghans and scarves for her family, cooking family meals and baking, caring for her beloved black labs, tending the gardens around her home at the top of Allen Avenue, and traveling.  Her favorite destinations were Charlestown, RI, Myrtle Beach, SC, and wherever her children and their families were. More than anything else she loved spending time with her 11 grandchildren: Laura, Susan, Theresa, Patrick, Luke, Spencer, Taylor, Tosh, Theo, Cecilia and Hugh.
In addition to Larry, her children and grandchildren, Barbara is also survived by her great-grandson, Alex, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
